Vintage Glass Fishing Float Buoy - EXTRA RG PORTUGAL 3

A difficult to find selenium infused glass fishing float from Portugal. It is marked Extra RG Portugal 3, and is about 5.5 inches in diameter. Please see photos for more details and condition of the float. As this is a working float, there is some wear and a small chip on the seal, but there are no cracks in the glass.

Historically selenium and manganese was added to glass chemical mixes to remove impurities in like iron that was often found in sand used to manufacture glass. The iron gave glass a blue/green color, but selenium and manganese made the glass appear clear. Over time and due to ultra violet sun exposure, the selenium in the glass ends up having a yellow hue, an attribute that is preferred by glass fishing float collectors.
